Why you should see
Wild At HeartConsidered utterly batty for its hyper-referential style and scenes of gory violence back in 1990, it's now a classic of top-shelf surrealism and an example of David Lynch at his bombastic best. Nicolas Cage plays Sailor Ripley, a fiery Elvis fan who falls for racy romantic Lula Fortune, played by Laura Dern. Their romance does not please Lula's mother, all smeared lipstick in garish close-ups, so she sets out to get Sailor killed. The frisky couple go on the run, hotly pursued by a myriad of eccentric characters. Fuelled by the lustiness of Sailor and Lula's love, the heady ride goes full pace until the lust runs out and the film takes a curiously mournful, thoughtful turn as Lynch's sense of everyday menace creeps in.
