65. The Avengers (1965)
The 60s TV show really took off with the introduction of Diana Rigg as the sexy Mrs Emma Peel. Married, but with her husband missing in action, and fond of wearing leather, Emma Peel was the thinking man's sex symbol. Foxy, but also able to deliver a mean karate chop. The sexiness of The Avengers comes from the chemistry between Emma Peel and her partner in crime fighting, Steed. Audiences were left to guess 'did they or didn't they' as the two flirted outrageously.

64. Crash (1996)
David Cronenberg caused a moral outrage with his film of J.G. Ballard's novel about people who fetishise car crashes. James Spader was at the heart of the storm for his scenes including a pivotal moment when we see the main characters watching car crashes and getting turned on together. Dark and disturbing but admirable and original.

63. The Lover's Guide (1991)
Where previous sex education films had all the frisson of a council health and safety video, Doctor Stanway, author of over 40 books and miles of column inches as an Agony Uncle, combined the gloss of softcore porn with friendly voice-over and interviews with the participants supposedly real-life couples to create a runaway best seller, now available in 14 languages. The censor passed it without cuts because of its advocation of sex within marriage but there's no doubt that the public hadn't seen anything like this before.

62. My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)
The story of Omar, a young Asian, and his lover Johnny, a former NF thug, who turn a run-down launderette into a palace, features the first interracial gay sex scene in British mainstream cinema. Originally made for TV the film rights were hastily snapped up. Director Frears has famously said, "Would you think it had theatrical possibilities? It's about a gay, Pakistani laundrette owner!". Demonstrations greeted the film's release in New York, the crowds furious about the screen kiss between Omar and Johnny.

61. Jamón Jamón (1992)
Penélope Cruz made her film debut aged just 17 in Bigas Luna's tale of a young couple whose impending marriage is put under threat by the mother of the groom doing everything she can to stop her son marrying beneath him. Cruz is the unwanted bride, and temptation is put in her way in the form of a handsome bullfighter, played by Javier Bardem. The film's many sex scenes, as well as its broad humour, made it an instant international hit, and propelled its cast to global stardom, Cruz winning many fans for her portrayal of a woman with "omelette-flavoured nipples".
