60. Caligula (1979)
The most expensive porn film ever made, Caligula was directed by Penthouse owner, Bob Guccione. The film had literary pretensions and boasted a cast of British thespians including Malcolm McDowell, Helen Mirren and Peter O'Toole all getting involved in Roman orgies! One of the film's sexiest scenes sees a half-naked Mirren belly dancing.

59. The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)
Gripping thriller about repressed desire and jealousy. Matt Damon is outstanding as Tom Ripley, the initially charming and then horribly sinister sociopath who worms his way into the lives of a wealthy playboy (Dickie Greenleaf, played by Jude Law) and his fiancée (Gwyneth Paltrow). Ripley's hidden passion for Dickie slowly surfaces, and one scene in particular bristles with frustrated desire - Dickie climbs out of the bath, unaware that Ripley cannot stop himself from taking surreptitious peeks at his naked body. The contrast between the two is awesome - Dickie is all arrogant, toned perfection, while Ripley is a dark, seething mass of secret desire.

58. Moonlighting (1985-89)
The show that used every trick in the screenwriting book to prolong the sexual tension. Maddy and David's love/hate relationship was the talk of the town and finally culminated in a lovemaking scene that had everyone holding their breath.

57. Rita, Sue & Bob Too (1986)
When Rita was released, it seemed that working class hero Alan Clarke, director of uncompromising fare such as Scum and Road, had put a flaming torch to his very own roots with this hilariously ribald tale of two white-stilettoed school girls (Siobhan Finneran and Michelle Holmes) who enter a menage a trois with a suburban ladies' man. Clarke, of course, knew that his film was totally true to the characters – and real life. It had been written by Bradford girl Andrea Dunbar. Shagging in cars with one leg out the passenger door, as the other waits her turn, the sex scenes are hysterically realistic, as the actresses brilliantly convey the feeling of doing something wonderfully naughty but also biologically pedestrian.

56. The Big Easy (1987)
Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin sizzle in New Orleans in one of the hottest thrillers around. Quaid's cop is investigating corruption in his own police department, whilst Barkin's attorney just wants to investigate him. The pair positively steam up the screen together in this sexy film.
