45. Last Tango In Paris (1972)
Marlon Brando delivers a fascinating performance as a man torn apart by his wife's suicide who attempts to bury his grief in a sudden, purely sexual relationship with an alluring stranger (Maria Schneider). The amount of time that Schneider spends naked in the film led to accusations of misogyny, as did the film's infamous butter scene.

44. Mulholland Drive (2001)
David Lynch originally filmed Mulholland Drive as a TV pilot but it was notoriously rejected by ABC who felt it was too strange and violent. A bright eyed young actress (newcomer Naomi Watts) travels to Hollywood to find fame, only to become drawn into a mystery involving another fragile young woman recovering from a car crash (Elena Herring) and an attempt on her life. The two female leads are terrific, and their lesbian love scenes are electrifying. The commitment of the two actors make them seem much more explicit than they are - in fact were only filmed from the waist up.

43. Body Heat (1981)
Kathleen Turner is the ultimate, scheming femme fatale in this tale of murder and obsession. Turner stars as the unhappily married woman who persuades a naïve William Hurt firstly to sleep with her, and then to kill her husband. Her seduction of Hurt, causing him to eventually break down the patio door for a romp, is infamous.

42. Weird Science (1985)
Director John Hughes made spotty teen geeks cool in this tale of two unpopular school kids (Gary and Wyatt) who, in their desperation to be liked, programme their computer to "create" a dream woman. Their wish is granted and Lisa, the living, breathing embodiment of male lust, steps out of a cloud of smoke, and into their lives. In 1985 there was only one candidate for the role of Lisa - Kelly LeBrock. Already a famous model, she'd shot to Hollywood fame the year before in The Woman In Red. She had the curves and pout that every teenage boy in the world fantasised about, and Weird Science was the perfect showcase for her 'talents'. The scene in which she showers naked in front of a bug-eyed Gary and Wyatt is still both hilarious and touching, and perfectly encapsulates what it is to be a young man.

41. Thelma And Louise (1991)
This brilliant road movie puts women in the driving seat. Thelma and Louise shoot a would-be rapist, and head for Mexico with the cops in pursuit. Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are instantly loveable as two brave but ordinary women who find themselves in an extraordinary situation. When Davis' Thelma beds a handsome young hitchhiker and has the best sex of her life, the whole audience is cheering her on. Especially as the hitchhiker is played by drop-dead gorgeous newcomer Brad Pitt. Virtually unheard of before this film, Pitt's career went into orbit as soon as Thelma (and the female cinema-going population) got one look at his incredible six-pack.
