50. The Wicker Man (1973)

A bona fide cult classic, best described as a "psychedelic pagan horror". A repressed, virginal Scottish policeman (Edward Woodward) visits a remote Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a girl, and becomes embroiled in sexual misadventure and pagan rites. The lissom Britt Ekland plays come-hitherish publican's daughter Willow, intent on dispensing (highly desirable) sexual favours to Woodward's prudish cop. In the film's sexiest scene, she writhes naked against the wall dividing her room from his in a fit of wild sexual abandon.

49. Footballers' Wives (2002)

Before this ITV drama hit our screens, not many people would have described the life of a footballer's wife as glamorous or fun-filled. But now, thanks to the antics of Chardonnay and her pals, their public image has been given a complete revamp. So, while the boys are off kicking balls around, these girls are indulging in designer gear wearing, champagne drinking, coke snorting, stud shagging high drama. Sexiest moment so far? Gillian Taylforth getting it on with Christian Solomeno on a snooker table.

48. Debbie Does Dallas (1978)

One of the highest selling pornos of all time, and apparently a favourite of British rockers Coldplay, Debbie Does Dallas tells the epic tale of a squad of cheerleaders who perform sexual favours to get one of their number enough cash to go to Dallas. This 1978 movie is supposedly responsible for the increased sales of VCRs in the 80s, in much the same way that porn shifts DVDs today. Debbie Does Dallas saves the best for last, climaxing with a girly shower scene.

47. Secretary (2002)

2002 indie hit about a lawyer (James Spader) and his submissive secretary Maggie Gyllenhaal who develop an S&M relationship. Just having Spader attached, an actor who ditched his Bratpack image for roles as a sexual oddball, seemed to promise a voyage into the darker sides of sexual deviancy, as did the poster which ran the tag line, ‘Assume the Position’ under the image of a woman touching her toes. In fact this witty Sundance winner was pretty tongue in cheek and largely inoffensive, perhaps a reflection of our more permissive times.

46. Lady Chatterley (1992)

Based on DH Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover (which was banned until an Old Bailey obscenity trial in 1960 because of its explicit sexual content) this is Ken Russell's telling of the tale of Lady Connie Chatterley and her husband's gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. Connie's husband is disabled and she is lonely, and she consequently finds herself falling into the arms of Mellors. Before filming, director Ken Russell vowed to show "sex as it has never been shown before on the BBC" and as one might expect, there are quite a lot of naughty bits. Star Joely Richardson was reportedly unhappy about the nudity, particularly in a scene where she and Mellors, played by Sean Bean, skip around naked while picking flowers.
