40. Buffy The Vampire Slayer (2001)

Joss Whedon struck gold when he turned his flawed movie Buffy The Vampire Slayer into a global hit TV show. Sarah Michelle Gellar kicked vampire butt at night whilst being a regular high school teen during the day. Buffy really got kinky in its sixth series when she had rampant sex with Spike, her immortal enemy.

39. The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)

This 1981 version was the fourth adaptation of the James M Cain novel charting the affair between a seedy drifter (Jack Nicholson) and the seductive wife of a roadside café owner (Jessica Lange). Director Bob Rafelson said the 1946 film noir version with Lana Turner and John Garfield ‘didn't pack enough lust’, and did his utmost to remedy the situation with his film. Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist rolled two cameras at once to catch every moment of the celebrated kitchen sex scene.

38. This Life (1996)

Amy Jenkins' riotous tale of life for a bunch of twenty-somethings embarking on adult life in mid-90s London started out as a cult favourite and, 32 episodes later, ended up a cultural phenomenon. Everyone was hooked on the antics of Warren, Milly, Egg et al. But it was the tortured, tumultuous relationship between feisty, but desperately vulnerable, Anna (Daniela Nardini) and arrogant, but hopelessly in love, Miles (Jack Davenport) that really captured the nation's imagination. The scene in which they finally make love is both deeply sexy and sweetly touching - just like the moment when Ross first kisses Rachel in Friends, you could hear a collective cheer go round the nation when it was broadcast.

37. Dirty Dancing (1987)

The seminal coming of age tale of the 80s, Dirty Dancing remains the teen girl's favourite to this day. Patrick Swayze reminds us all of why he became famous, as a holiday camp rogue who seduces an innocent girl with his moves. The ultimate chick flick, Dirty Dancing continues to sell well today, perhaps in part due to steamy moments like the one in which Swayze first dances with Jennifer Grey.

36. Trainspotting (1995)

Danny Boyle's adaptation of Irvine Welsh's tale of group of junkies in Edinburgh became the film of the 90s. Blessed with a super-cool cast, razor sharp script and fiercely original visual style it provoked and shocked in equal measure, causing outrage in Middle England and winning over an entire generation of cinema-goers. We all fell in love with Ewan McGregor's heroin addict Renton, the epitome of wasted charm - the scene in which he unknowingly beds Kelly McDonald's schoolgirl Diane remains one of the most grittily realistic, but sweetly charming, ever made.
