28. Ai No Corrida (1976)
A controversial Japanese 'erotic masterpiece' based on a notorious murder case, In The Realm Of The Senses focuses on the sexually insatiable relationship between a Japanese inn-keeper and one of his wife's maids. The actors had sex in the film for real, causing it to be banned in Japan, but it became popular in Europe. In a final shocking scene, the maid kills her lover, by cutting off his penis.

27. Shakespeare In Love (1998)
Multi-Oscar winning tale of Shakespeare's early career, and of his love affair with a beautiful, aristocratic young actress (Gwyneth Paltrow). Joseph Fiennes is dashing as Will, but it's Gwynnie who steals the show (and bagged an Oscar) for her part as the fiercely intelligent Viola. In the true spirit of Shakespeare, mistaken identity pushes the plot along on a number of occasions, particularly in the case of Viola, who has to pass for a man to be allowed on stage. It's a plot device that makes possible the film's most passionate moment - when Will unravels the bandages that are wound around her body to give her the appearance of a man, and lovingly reveals the woman underneath.

26. Boogie Nights (1997)
Paul Thomas Anderson takes us on a voyage to the golden era of 70s Hollywood porn, before VHS, when it was considered an art form. Mark Wahlberg plays an aspiring actor with a huge talent, who is spotted by porn director Burt Reynolds and made into a star. Boogie Nights boasts comedy names like Dirk Diggler, Jack Horner and Brock Landers. It also contains explicit sex scenes, such as when Wahlberg and Julianne Moore have sex on camera as porn stars for the first time.
