15. Fatal Attraction (1987)
The film that could have been a government health warning against extra-marital fooling around. Michael Douglas is the married man without a conscience, Glenn Close is the blonde whose charms he cannot resist. Their sex is rampant and abandoned, most memorably in a goods lift, with both Douglas and Close turning in fantastically passionate performances. It's when Douglas withdraws from the partnership that Close's wild, edgy appeal becomes something far more sinister.

13. Tipping The Velvet (2002)
The BBC's primetime adaptation of Sarah Waters' novel about a Whitstable oyster girl and her sexual adventures with a string of women was deliberately trailed as one of the most controversial TV programmes ever screened. From its title, a Victorian euphemism for cunnilingus, to our favourite scene, when heroine Nan is pleasured by her dominatrix lover using a leather dildo, it was extraordinarily raunchy and threw the tabloid press into a frenzy for weeks.

12. Showgirls (1995)
Sometimes a film that's meant to be sexy just isn't. On the surface, Showgirls has got all the ingredients for a real trouser-stirrer but, somehow, Paul Verhoeven's Las Vegas stripper flick is tacky when it should be arousing, and funny when it should be raunchy, so much so that it's become a kitsch classic. Particularly OTT is the swimming pool sex between Elizabeth Berkeley and Kyle Maclachlan - he wears a look of furious concentration, she thrashes around like a woman possessed.

11. Cool Hand Luke (1967)
One of popular culture's most iconic scenes appears in this Paul Newman film about a convict who refuses to be broken by the system. When the prison's chain gang are outside working, they watch lustily as a busty girl washes her car and plays with the hose and foam. Copied hundreds of time since in commercials and other films, but never bettered.
