20. Pride And Prejudice (1995)

The BBC's lavish adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel launched Colin Firth as the misunderstood Mr Darcy at the heart of Elizabeth's affections. In what has become known as 'the most erotic moment in costume drama' Darcy appears from a lake in a wet shirt to a bewildered Elizabeth who can barely contain her glee. No sex here but the proof is in the frenzy the scene caused nationwide.

19. Ghost (1990)

This tale of love beyond the grave has become a true family favourite. However, it contains one scene that most families would rather not watch together. Demi Moore is engrossed in a spot of pottery when she's disturbed by her husband (Patrick Swayze). Suddenly, all thoughts of throwing a good pot go out the window as the pair indulge in some messy, clay-covered sex.

18. Top Gun (1986)

An out and out 80s classic. Cruise is Lt Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell, the top-gun pilot on a testosterone high, Kelly McGillis his devastatingly beautiful flight trainer. Of course they get it together, but it's not their "soft and gentle" love-making that sets this movie on fire. Top Gun has come to be seen as a bona fide, mega-camp gay movie, a theory supported by none other than Quentin Tarantino in his film Sleep With Me. It's easy to see why. A phallic backdrop of jets and motorbikes combines with the fetishism of men in uniform and an atmosphere of bristling testosterone-fuelled competition. The scene in which an oiled up trio of Maverick, Iceman and Slider play volleyball, is regarded as one of the greatest screen representations of homo-eroticism ever. Who'd have thought it?

17. Baywatch (1990-2000)

For a TV show to have one billion viewers worldwide, it must be doing something right. In Baywatch's case, that something was getting Pamela Anderson to run in a tight red swimsuit. David Hasselhoff knew from experience that good television was simple television and they don't come much simpler than Baywatch. Look good, don't say too much and save other good-looking people from drowning. And you thought sex on the beach was just a cocktail.

16. Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Susan Sarandon is Janet, the repressed 50s newly wed clad in virginal white petticoat and sensible bra, who is willingly seduced by suspender clad aliens into a world of orgies and free love. Presiding over the mayhem is Tim Curry as Dr Frankenfurter, who knows that upstanding husband Brad will give in too. Written in 1974 by Richard O’Brien, it was made into a movie a year later, to be generally ignored by critics and audiences alike. Rather than write it off, 20th Century Fox decided to give the film a second chance, hoping to attract the growing 'midnight-circuit' crowd, and it has since taken over $150 million and become the most consistently exhibited movie of all time. The scene in which Janet sings 'Ta Ta Ta Touch Me' in her bra and knickers has become a global gender-confused classic.
