THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW FILM REVIEW |

 |
Camp as Christmas. Comedy, carnality, horror and good old rock 'n' roll combine to make this a staggeringly kitsch classic
Richard O'Brien's cult musical tribute to American B movies remains as seminal a snapshot of 1970s Glam as 'Hunky Dory' or Cabaret. Watching it a quarter of a century on, you're struck by two things: the quality of O'Brien's instantly familiar rock 'n' roll and Curry's performance.
He plays sweet transvestite Dr Frank N Furter, a crazed scientist hosting a convention of alien deviants at his Ohio castle. Into this crypt of carnality stumble preppy couple Brad (Bostwick) and Janet (Sarandon), just as the lusty doctor unveils his new creation, Aryan love machine Rocky (Hinwood).
The cast (including O'Brien himself, looking like Brian Eno's runt brother) tuck into the ensuing sexual shenanigans, cannibalism and murder as if they're in a Hammer Horror production of 'Oops, There Goes My Cherry'. Curry hogs the spotlight. His role is manna from Heaven and he rips up a queen bitch storm like the spoilt bastard son of Marc Bolan and Frances De La Tour.
