  THE OUTLAW FILM REVIEW

And it's this relationship that is the most controversial aspect of the film's reputation. It has appeared in various forms as more explicit versions of the film are released. The scene's most attention-grabbing moments centre on a tussle between Rio and Billy in a hay barn, in which he threatens to rip off her dress, hence the film's famous poster depicting Russell with ripped clothing.

Despite its mammary obsession, the film has deeper sexual undercurrents that include hints at homosexuality, surprising for the time but not when one considers it was the first film to break the Hayes Code of movie 'ethics'. But The Outlaw remains untainted by the emotional and philosophical weight of most westerns, decidedly lighter in tone even at the final shoot-out.

Verdict
A typically lavish Hughes production that launched Jane Russell into the fantasies of many a movie-goer, The Outlaw is also notable as a spirited retelling of the Billy The Kid legend.
