  9 1/2 WEEKS FILM REVIEW

Notorious erotic drama starring Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger in their primes. Somewhat soulless and not actually terribly sexy

A hot young commodities broker, John (Rourke), inveigles a sexually curious divorcée, art gallery assistant Elizabeth (Basinger), into satisfying his sadomasochistic fantasies, which she finds degrading but addictive.

Lyne sets up every sex scene as if creating a portfolio for 'Penthouse', but each coupling betrays the meticulous preparation, so the lovers appear posed and passionless.

The film has clearly suffered from more revisions than a politician's speech and the compromise is evident. The characters are cast as mere pawns in a powergame. It's a big tease that promises to say something significant and profound about fatal attraction but ultimately proves impotent. Worse still, it's not even erotic.
