  EMMANUELLE FILM REVIEW

Soft-core classic with Sylvia Kristel as the inexperienced wife of a diplomat who embarks on an erotic journey of self-discovery in the steamy climes of Bangkok

The superbly monikered Just Jaekin made porn semi-respectable with his adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan's steamy underground classic. He also practically invented lipstick lesbianism, fuelled the fantasies of teenage boys everywhere and created an unlikely feminist icon in the process (well, in the sense that Emmanuelle is sexually liberated - lets not stretch that point too far).

Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel is the nubile young Emmanuelle - a Parisian model who flies out to Bangkok to be with her husband. Once there she's encouraged to indulge her Sapphic tendencies with a bevy of lithe beauties, including the blonde haired photographer Bee (Green). Cue lots of soft focus shots of tender caresses amid waterfalls and sweaty jungle undergrowth. Emmanuelle then hooks up with Mario (Cuny) a dirty old lothario who takes her to opium dens to teach her the secrets of eroticism.

That's about it. Pretty tame by today's standards; it's nothing compared to the average Joe Eszterhas/Paul Verhoeven collaboration. There's a lot of breasts and behinds, a fair amount of restrained humping, a few comedy handlebar moustaches and an induction into the mile high club. All in all, a somewhat tedious but occasionally amusing period romp.
