  DR. NO FILM REVIEW

The hit Bond formula is established in this first, arguably more credible Ian Fleming adaptation. Memorable notably for Ursula Andress' Venus-like first appearance

Producers Saltzman and Broccoli were so confident that the first Bond movie would be a hit that the final credit reads 'James Bond will be back in From Russia with Love'. Indeed he was back - again and again, for the next 20 years and is still going.

Although they became more and more packed with technical wizardry, the successful recipe of sex, violence and campy humour was immediately established, and has remained virtually unchanged.

Bond, a prisoner on the island of the megalomaniac Dr No (Wiseman), survives a tarantula in his bed, car crashes and radioactive contamination. Most of the time he's accompanied by the voluptuous Honey Rider (Andress, iconically first seen rising from the sea in a bikini with a knife at her waist).

Fleming wanted David Niven for Bond, but the virtually unknown, Scottish-accented, tough Connery was chosen in order to give 007 a more modern image.
