  CRUEL INTENTIONS FILM REVIEW

Debauched rich step-siblings Kathryn and Sebastian agree to a summer wager. If Sebastian can deflower the headmaster's daughter he can bed the one conquest that eludes him, his stepsister. If he fails, she gets his car

Ruthless rich kid Sebastian Valmont (Phillippe) has one mission in life - to seduce and then abandon every girl in his school. While Sebastian imagines himself to be the ultimate Don Juan his step sister (Geller) gets her kicks from plotting the downfall of rivals and exacting revenge upon anyone who betrays her.

As they swan around their parents' vast Manhattan mansion during the summer break, the debauched pair decide on a game of seduction to keep them entertained. Using Sebastian's brooding sexual desire for her own ends Kathryn enlists his help in bedding Cecile (Blair), the new girlfriend of her former lover, offering herself as the prize if he succeeds in deflowering her "You can put it anywhere you like", she says. Unfortunately, the lothario begins to sense an emotion he has thus far failed to experience: love, the object of his affections being the chaste headmaster's daughter, Annette (Witherspoon).

This superb teen black comedy is the fourth movie to be based on De Laclos' 1872 novel 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses'. It works well in a contemporary setting, exchanging the heaving bosoms and bodices for little black dresses and Calvin Klein. And judging from it, deception and sexual intrigue are highly relevant in the bitchy world of American teens.
