42nd Street (1933)

The ultimate behind-the-scenes musical, 42nd Street tells the tale of showman Julian Marsh (Warner Baxter), who puts his all into what may be his last show, only to face disaster when leading lady Dorothy Brock (Bebe Daniels) sprains her ankle. The day is only saved when understudy Peggy Sawyer (Ruby Keeler) steps in. The unforgettable soundtrack includes Shuffle Off To Buffalo and, of course, the title tune. These combined with Busby Berkeley's extravagant, kaleidoscopic dance numbers make 42nd Street a truly memorable musical.

8 Mile (2002)

Global hip hop phenomenon Eminem made his acting debut (to immense critical acclaim) in Curtis Hanson's tale of an aspiring young rapper from the wrong side of the tracks in Detroit. It's a compelling story, basically a retelling of the early days of Eminem's own career, but it's the hip hop battle scenes, in which MCs compete to win the approval of a rowdy and demanding crowd with their lyrical ability, that really set this film on fire.
