Yves Montand
Yves Montand
Though regarded by many of his fans as a Frenchman, Yves Montand was in fact born in Italy in 1921. His parents fled Mussolini to France and whilst growing up he quit school and worked on the docks. Montand was discovered by the singer Edith Piaf and sang in her nightclub before starring with her in his first film Star Without Light in 1946. After making a series of small films, Montand gained international fame in the 1952 classic thriller The Wages Of Fear. He then appeared in Heroes And Sinners, before singing in Let's Make Love in 1960, alongside Marilyn Monroe, which brought him to the attention of America. Some of Montand's best work came in collaboration with film-maker Costa Gavras, in movies like The Sleeping Car Murder, Z, The Confession and State Of Seige.
