Denzel Washington
Denzel Washington
Born in 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, Washington spent several years as a Shakespearean actor on stage before making his film debut in 1981's Carbon Copy. He impressed on TV in St Elsewhere before boosting his profile further with A Soldier's Story. Since then Washington, who won an Oscar for 1989's glory, has often played real people with deadly seriousness and considerable presence, among them Steve Biko, Malcolm X and the boxer Rubin Carter. Indeed, he is often affectionately mocked in black culture as being the actor to take on any story of a bona fide black hero. In 1995 he made Quentin Tarantino squirm by confronting him about the racial slurs in the Crimson Tide's script. Won Best Actor Oscar in 2002 for his role in Training Day.

Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton
A natural actress, with an air of the ordinary about her and a knack for playing kooky characters, Diane Keaton was born in LA in 1946. She dropped out of college in California to study drama at the Neighbourhood Playhouse in New York. During the 1970s, she was discovered by Woody Allen, who cast her in a number of his films such as Play It Again Sam, Sleeper, Love And Death and Manhattan, but it was in his 1977 picture Annie Hall, that Keaton found huge acclaim. She won an Academy Award for the role. Keaton also starred in the Godfather films as Kay Adams, Michael Corleone's initially naïve, and then later cynical, wife.

Dudley Moore
Dudley Moore
Dudley Moore was born in 1935 in England and appeared with Peter Cook and Alan Bennett in the groundbreaking comedy revue Beyond The Fringe. A talented pianist, he would often use the instrument in his comedy routines. Moore and Cook then teamed up as a comedy duo and appeared in films such as The Wrong Box, Bedazzled and The Hound Of The Baskervilles. He struggled to get a major role in a movie on his own, but finally succeeded in Blake Edward's 10 in 1979. Moore then achieved huge fame and an Oscar nomination, playing a spoiled millionaire alongside Liza Minnelli, in Arthur (1981). He rarely achieved the same success in his subsequent films, but Moore continued to be hugely popular until his recent death.
