Hannah And Her Sisters, 1986

Allen is on top form in this Chekovian tale of three sisters, sibling rivalry and adultery. Set in Manhattan, this bittersweet comedy has love, loss and mortality in spadefuls. Michael Caine lights up the screen as Elliot, the accountant married to the wholesome Hannah (Mia Farrow), whose mid life crisis rears its head when he develops a schoolboy crush on Hannah's beautiful sister. A film of great tenderness and humanity.

Harvey, 1950

James Stewart returns to the role he created on Broadway for this beloved screen adaptation of Mary Cross's delightful slice of whimsical fantasy. Indeed, it is impossible to imagine any other actor essaying the central figure of the genial drunk Elwood P Dowd, whose best buddy just happens to be a 6ft 4in invisible white rabbit called Harvey. Though breezy, the film actually has a lot to say about the nature of loneliness and the importance of tolerance.

History Of The World Part 1, 1981

Mel Brooks presents man's lack of evolution, from the dawn of time to some fantasized future. Employing a scattershot approach, the humour is broad in every sense of the word and Brooks appears to be out to offend everybody.
