13. A History Of Violence
David Cronenberg creates his most accessible film yet, with Viggo Mortensen pitch-perfect as a small-town family man whose true identity is questioned after he effortlessly dispatches two crooks.
There are no easy answers in A History Of Violence, which plays out as an entertaining, refined thriller with psychological undercurrents, and a complex evaluation of violence, asking 'If someone is infected with violence, can they ever be cured?'

12. The Constant Gardener
Ralph Fiennes stars as a mild-mannered diplomat investigating the murder of his wife - an outstanding Rachel Weisz - in a remote area of northern Kenya, in Fernando Meirelles follow-up to City Of God.
Not only is The Constant Gardener an adroit adaptation that captures the anger of Le Carré's novel, but it's a consummate film in its own right. A grown-up thriller filled with passionate performances, this is one of the finest films of 2005.

11. Downfall
An extremely interesting and important film that dares to explore the human face of Nazism, this drama plays out in and around Hitler's bunker during the final weeks of the Second World War in Europe. Bruno Ganz does an impressive job of bringing Hitler to life; he does not rage and spit his way through every scene.
His Hitler is a man ailing in both mind and body who drifts between moods, one moment raging, another moment lucid, and occassionally avuncular and benign. It's this last facet that is most unfamiliar, but it's also one of the film's strengths, reminding us we can't neatly segregate Hitler from the rest of the species to ease our incomprehension at his acts.
