9. Million Dollar Baby
Weighing in with a heavyweight work that tops anything he has done since 1992's Unforgiven, Clint Eastwood's boxing saga is a relentlessly unsentimental melodrama that delivers its body-blows when you least expect them.
Eastwood is the ageing boxing trainer reluctantly coaching a waitress (Hilary Swank, who won an Oscar for her performance) to fight in the ring. A story about redemption that embraces religion, family and social affairs, Million Dollar Baby delivers a knock-out punch you just won't see coming.

Spielberg strips out all the clichés of the event movie: no love interest, no wisecracking buddy, no concerned president pondering the disaster. Just Tom Cruise as a dad trying to keep his estranged kids ahead of the wave of destruction.
An unstoppable juggernaut of action and anxiety that will have you blundering from the cinema in a state of nervous exhaustion.

With computer imagery airbrushing almost all the charm out of animated film, the sight of thumbprints in clay only enhances the appeal of Wallace & Gromit's big screen debut in The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, as the duo attempt to humanely trap a giant bunny who's responsible for veggie mayhem.
As he did with WWII caper Chicken Run, Park takes the Hollywood blockbuster to an understated yet nevertheless absurd extreme and the result is quintessentially British as well as brilliantly funny,

Tim Burton directs Johnny Depp as the infamously reclusive inventor Willy Wonka in this gothic fairytale of a film. Children are so often the fount of wisdom in crappy Hollywood films that it's pleasing to see brats gets their comeuppance in this adaptation of Roald Dahl's novel.
In Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, spoilt kids of every stripe suffer fitting fates; adults and kids alike will take macabre delight in the punishment of naughty children.
