Murderball
20. Murderball
An aggressive, exciting sport, quad rugby is the blue riband event of the Paralympic world. Its great exponents include Mark Zupan, a bearded, tattooed jock whose colourful exterior masks a remarkable athlete. A key member of Team USA, Zupan's arch-nemesis is Joe Soares, a former team-mate who now coaches the Canadian national team.

While this is a story of courage and unlikely success, the film depicts quad rugby's stars as athletes first and paraplegics second. Arguably the greatest sports movie since Hoop Dreams and When We Were Kings.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped
19. The Beat That My Heart Skipped
Remakes of foreign films can be tricky affairs, but when a director is able to significantly reinterpret the source material and find hidden depths, the results can be fascinating. Such is the case with The Beat That My Heart Skipped.

Directed by Jacques Audiard (Sur Mes Levres), this update of James Toback's 1978 debut film Fingers improves on the original in almost every way, as the dilemma of a young man trying to escape a life of violence through classical music is explored with understated subtlety.

Broken Flowers
18. Broken Flowers
Funny, disciplined, and acted with great skill and warmth. Bill Murray's Mr Mid-Life Crisis strikes you as a suitable Everyman for the nagging dissatisfaction of the age in this loosely constructed tale of an ageing bachelor visiting old girlfriends to see which one had his kid.

With its clean structure and slowly revealed Zen ethos about being-in-the-now, Broken Flowers blooms into something profound. At its close, we are jolted into thoughts about our tenuous bonds to one another and how easy it would be to slip into utter isolation.

In Her Shoes
17. In Her Shoes
Adapted from the bestselling book, director Curtis Hanson delivers a masterclass tearjerker that never once feels contrived, and Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette deliver two of the best turns of their careers, as the Feller sisters who come to blows over everything life throws at them.

In Her Shoes is consummate Hollywood filmmaking, at the heart of which is a credible portrayal of two sisters, and spreads the gospel about the need for personal growth and responsibility without resorting to sentimentality.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
16. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
A subversive comic film noir, from the writer of Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is one of the most enjoyable and quotable thrillers to hit the screen in a long time.
