The Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn : 1987
Five years after the original became a smash hit, Ramie returned to the 'Evil Dead' with more money, more gags and gallons more blood in this hilarious slapstick, ooze-spraying, chainsaw-hacking sequel. Bruce Campbell is back fighting with another wave of evil demons in his remote woodland shack. The bigger budget seems to have been almost entirely spent on increasing the amount of gore on offer. Money well spent then.

Kids : 1995
Harmony Korine's controversial screenplay features under-age just about everything. The moral majority were up in arms and, of course, the cinemas were packed. Discovering she's HIV positive, the teenage Chloe Sevigny tries to prevent wilful bastard Leo Fitzpatrick from infecting any more of his teenage conquests. Directed in the most voyeuristic way possible by Larry Clark, Kids will disturb anyone with children.

Cannibal Holocaust : 1980
One of the most notorious films to emerge from the Italian exploitation boom, Deodato's shockumentary-style film, investigating the disappearance of American reporters in the South American jungle, is extreme viewing. Be warned: this film contains scenes that most will find offensive and is not recommended for unprepared viewers. Featuring alarming moments of penis chopping, violent rape and brutal abortion, the film's most lasting image is that of a young Yamamomo girl skewered from rectum to mouth to by a large pole.

Night Of The Living Dead : 1968
George A Romero's zombie classic changed the way that people perceived horror movies. When the dead mysteriously return to life and go looking for food, a small band of mismatched people find themselves trapped together in a deserted farmhouse. As the zombies close in, a young black man named Ben proves to be the most heroic and resourceful member of the group. Night Of The Living Dead can be enjoyed for its remarkable special effects, or as a satire of an America torn apart by the civil rights movement of the 1960s.

Straw Dogs : 1971
There are many pretenders to banned cinema's throne, but Sam Peckinpah's psychological tour de force of murder and horror is a genuine contender. Dustin Hoffman and Susan George move to Cornwall to escape from the violence of American society, but find that the British countryside has equally malevolent forces lurking within it. This long-banned masterpiece of shock cinema is full of controversy. George is violently raped by an old flame, only to rediscover her feelings for the perpetrator during the scene and Hoffman's character reacts murderously when backed into a corner by the locals.
