Basket Case : 1981
It may have a low budget, but this original (and excellent) sick horror slasher directed by schlock king Frank Henenlotter delivers big laughs. Former Siamese twin Duane Bradley (Van Hentenryck), who carries his hideously deformed sibling Belial around in a big basket, is out for revenge on the doctors who separated the pair in childhood. This naturally involves setting murderous, mutant bro on them in increasingly imaginative and visceral fashion. Frequently revolting but creative and very funny, this was successful enough to spawn two sequels. The revolting Belial is one of the nastiest things you'll ever see.

Snuff : 1976
A gang of bikers, in thrall to a demonic guru, target the pregnant wife of a film director in this notorious shocker. Directed by grindhouse auteurs Michael and Roberta Findlay, Snuff is one of those feature films whose title has entered the English language. The film's infamy is provided by its final scene, in which the terrified screams of a murder victim continue after the screen has faded to black, giving the movie a horrible realistic quality. Snuff was expertly marketed by its creators, who leaked stories about the authorities wanted to prosecute them to the press to build up the hype.

Tenebrae : 1982
Razor-slashing, axe-hacking and artery-spraying mayhem infest one of Dario Argento's most accomplished and compelling thrillers. When a crazed killer carrying out brutal murders inspired by his work contacts a successful writer, he decides to help the police catch him. The situation becomes more desperate when Neal himself receives disturbing death threats as the crazed killer is propelled on by vivid flashbacks. Featuring the infamous 'spurting stump' finale and a technically astounding 'crawling camera' sequence, Tenebrae is a remarkable and truly unforgettable sensory experience.

Cannibal Ferox 2 : 1984
A plane carrying models, Vietnam vets, palaeontologists and drunk wives crashes in the 'Valley of the Dinosaurs', a remote part of a cannibal-infested jungle in this extreme piece of cinema. Featuring cockfighting, death by quicksand, heart ripping, piranha shin-shredding, sacrificial rites and copious female nakedness, Cannibal Ferox 2 certainly has its moments. Even within the realm of low-grade exploitation fare, this comedy-tinged adventure film, like its impenetrable location, is pretty hard going.

Romance : 1999
Caroline Ducey is the voracious and adventurous Marie in Catherine Breillat's penetrating, controversial account of a young French woman's walk on the sexual wild side. When her boyfriend refuses to have sex with her, Marie decides to embark on a series of affairs. She pursues these explicit encounters with a strange, poignant lack of engagement, all the way to rape.
