Caligula : 1979
A sublimely ridiculous thesp-filled porno-togarama - with a gob-smacking combination of luvvies, Ancient Rome and Penthouse magazine. Malcolm McDowell plays the dastardly, epileptic Roman Emperor hell-bent on testing his authority before he goes mad and his subjects get even. The cast includes John Gielgud, Peter O'Toole and Helen Mirren, but the undoubted star of the show is Danilo Donati's staggering set design complete with fabulously grandiose beheading machine. As a Penthouse funded Tinto Brass film, expect a lot of nudity that's rarely explicit but entirely gratuitous.

The Last House On The Left : 1972
In the history of the horror genre, Wes Craven's low-budget rape-revenge movie The Last House On The Left has long been revered as one of the nastiest of the Video Nasties, a film so depraved and immoral that it remained at the top of the British Board of Film Classification's banned list for 30 years. Teenagers Mari and Phyllis are abducted by a gang of vicious criminals, then tortured and killed. The twist comes when the killers stop off at Mari's parents house by accident, and her middle-class parents extra bloody revenge.

Baise-Moi : 2001
Girls just want to have fun in this nihilistic, groundbreaking French feminist rape revenge odyssey. After being gang-raped, Manu (Anderson) murders her brother and boyfriend, before going on the run with prostitute Nadine (Bach), who has just killed her nagging flatmate. The two girls go in search of boys to shag and kill. Carefully calculated to shock, Baise-Moi disgusted and provoked its native French audience. The controversy is not solely confined to the scenes of explicit sex: the real taboo being broken here is the consensual attitude to rape (Manu submits placidly to being raped).

Urotsukidoji - Legend Of The Overfiend : 1989
Demons run riot in Japan - and so do the animators' libidos - in this notorious and downright dodgy story of demon rape. The gods of good and evil battle for supremacy in a Tokyo high school, but unfortunately, their methods involve raping and slaughtering their way through the students. This is a sick world where girls are knicker-revealing waifs, sex climaxes in mutilation, and penis-envy is not just about size but number too. Offensive and proud of it.

Bad Lieutentant : 1992
The BBFC weren't too happy with Harvey Keitel's crack guzzling NYPD officer in Abel Ferrara's warped, but brilliant thriller. Thanks to a gambling addiction, Keitel is in serious debut to the Mafia. When a nun is raped and murdered, he spots an opportunity to redeem himself, in the eyes of both God and the mob. Ferrara doesn't so much flirt with the extremes of taste and emotion as molest them but, thanks to Keitel's miraculous performance, he gets his message across.
