Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger in 9½ Weeks

9½ Weeks (1986)

The premise of Adrian Lyne's yuppie bonkathon is actually pretty hot: beautiful art gallery assistant Elizabeth (Kim Basinger) gives herself to a sharply-suited stranger (Mickey Rourke before his face melted), trusting that in obeying his every wicked whim she'll find the kind of sexual fulfillment that only comes with total abandonment. Unfortunately, former ad director Lyne's gauzy aesthetics cast such an air-brushed haze over proceedings that the whole escapade looks like a commercial for nigh-on everything onscreen. When Rourke blindfolds Basinger, you expect a cutaway to an infomercial explaining why the Lights-Out Eroto-Blind is absolutely the last word in luxury vision impairment. And the infamous fridge scene? Let's just say that whoever commissioned those food-porn M&S ads has definitely been paying attention. 9½ Weeks: this is not just S&M. This is soft-focus, treacle-glazed, none-more-1980s S&M.

Apocalypse Now
Martin Sheen journeys through Vietnam and Cambodia to terminate flipped-out renegade US colonel Marlon Brando. But his mission becomes a screaming trip into madness, stunningly realised by Coppola's hallucinogenic direction and a cast dragged from Hollywood's Narcotics Anonymous
