11. The Filth And The Fury
These days, Iggy Pop is hawking car insurance, Norwich Union have enlisted Ringo Starr and Alice Cooper to tell you about their brand repositioning, while a passionate Johnny Rotten wants you to buy British butter. Oh yes, the times they have a-changed. Even in 2000, when Julien Temple revisited the Sex Pistol's story in The Filth And The Fury, it was a lifetime since the micro-managed punk quartet's incendiary 26 month career imploded, and the idea that the establishment ever got in a tizzy over the prospect of a song dissing Her Madgeness getting to the top spot in the top 40 now seems as charmingly quaint as the concept of the "hit parade" itself. Temple's second foray into the world of the Pistols gives much-needed balance to his McClarenite fantasy The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle (1980), but it's hard to swallow a celebration of nihilistic anarchy in the UK when its most eloquent proponent now greases his palm with the cash of a multi-million pound dairy corporation. Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?
