Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan
Like the bastard child of Charlie Chaplin and Groucho Marx, Sacha Baron Cohen ruthlessly skewered prejudices by creating the man from Kazakhstan, who gleefully tramples on every social nicety, Hulk-smashing taboos into a million tiny pieces and scattering them to the wind. As Borat, he uses the character's supposed naivety to caricature racism ("chocolate faces"), anti-Semitism ("smash the Jew chick before he hatches!"), homophobia ("You telling me the man who try to put a rubber fist in my anus was a homosexual?"), xenophobia ("May a-George Bush a-drink the blood of every single man, woman, and child of Iraq") and sexism ("What kind of car can I buy that attract woman with shaved vazhïn?"). We might not have much sympathy for some of the targets he gulls in the US, but spare a thought for the inhabitants of Glod, Romania, who later alleged that they didn't realise that Cohen's footage of their home village was not destined for a serious documentary, while Kazakhstan's government initially fumed that the film was "a concoction of bad taste and ill manners which is incompatible with the ethics and civilized behavior of Kazakhstan's people" They later decided to play along, inviting Borat to visit. High five!
