Frustrated by the actions of the Jedi Council during the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker begins to fall under the influence of Chancellor Palpatine, who offers a shadowy comfort and reassurance to the increasingly powerful young Jedi.
Despite his belief that he can master the Force, Skywalker slowly succumbs to the Dark Side and, unwittingly, to Palpatine's Sith Master. After suffering horrific injuries on the lava planet of Mustafar, Anakin is forced to wear a protective life-support suit, and so his new identity is complete. Step forward Darth Vader.

The sneaky Chancellor Palpatine has already engineered his way from Senator to head of the Republic by declaring a state of emergency with the outbreak of the Clone Wars.
The sneaky Chancellor Palpatine has already engineered his way from Senator to head of the Republic by declaring a state of emergency with the outbreak of the Clone Wars.
Once in power, Palpatine abuses his position, staying long beyond his agreed term of office, all the while claiming to be working for the benefit of the Republic.
His influence reaches far beyond the political arena though, as he nudges Anakin Skywalker along the path to the Dark Side and encourages enemies of the Republic to attack. Although the Jedi Council are unable to see it, he carries out much of his work under the guise of his even more sinister alter-ego, that of Darth Sidious, the Sith Master.
