Before any of the arguments started, the first problem we had when we started compiling this list was answering the age-old question: What is cool? Is it defined by the clothes on your back, the shades on your face, the records you own or the way you walk?
Cool is a state of mind. The paradox at the heart of cool is that it must be authentic - but also imbued with an element of artifice and ironic detachment, which generates that all-important style.
Coolness doesn't have a Best Before date - although some of these films and their directors will be judged more, or less, cool by each successive generation. All the same, you'll know deep in your gut what's cool and what isn't, which came in useful when compiling this list.
