Top Prize (Sony VAIO FW) - House of Flying Daggers
VAIOlence has never looked beautiful before. The martial arts scenes in this epic are more wonderfully choreographed than most theatrical productions, the colours throughout more vivid than a thousand air brushed rainbows. Offset against talented young actor’s mystical surroundings and a love story that merits more than one outing for the old heart rending VAIOlins the House of Flying Daggers has more style than Jackie Chan has scars.
Runner up (Blu-Ray player) – Moulin Rouge
This movie is filled with so much colour and movement that even after the tenth time viewing it you can always find some thing new. The flashes of 'impressionist painting' references come so often you can barely count them. And the use of classic cinematographic techniques and models is like visual poetry. And a music score that is well known and at the same time fresh and exciting speeds you through until you realise that you are again at the end with tears in your eyes and your finger on the play button... once is never enough.
Runner up (Blu-Ray player) - Edward Scissor Hands
Tim Burton's film- "Edward Scissorhands" is a modern-day fairy-tale. Vincent Price is a lonely old man who in lieu of a real son decides to create one. The movie itself is clever witty stylish gothic and visually striking without being overwhelming. Johnny Depp was perfect for the role of misfit in this heart breaking film. Edward Scissorhands is a witty comedy arcs into poignance. Even though this film is strange and funny it still manages to be heart moving. Burton has found a way to move through camp to emotional authenticity to communicate-through a concentration of style and innocence.
