Detailed Biographes:

Tamzin Malleson
Penny

It’s been a busy year for Tamzin Malleson who plays the delectable but cold-hearted Penny. Since the last series of Teachers, Tamzin has appeared in The Vice and Murder City for ITV1 and the BBC3 drama Bodies, which is about to be shown on BBC2.

In the new series of Teachers, Penny wastes no time in attempting to get close to one of her new colleagues – a little too close for his liking. And despite humiliation and disappointment so soon after arriving at the new Wattkins Comprehensive, Penny quickly regains her composure and sets her sights on another new face – but is he really old enough to be a teacher? “Penny gets herself into some ridiculous situations this series, but she’s so self-centred that she doesn’t really notice that she’s setting herself up to be humiliated”, says Tamzin Malleson. “Penny is basically obsessed with the way she looks, deeply vain and ultimately not very secure. I actually partly based her on an English teacher I had at school who caused a lot of trouble.”

This fourth series sees the introduction of several new characters – Ewan (Lee Williams) the new Head of English, Ben (Mathew Horne) an atheist RE teacher and Damien (Daon Broni) a cynical Food Technology teacher. And they’re not about to welcome Penny, Lindsay and the rest of the Summerdown misfits, with open arms. “The boys aren’t exactly pleased to see us and while Ewan seems a little bit more amenable to conversation, Ben and Damien are united in their approach – don’t make eye contact and say nothing. Obviously, they can’t keep it up for very long and after some intense hounding, eventually crack.”

What Penny lacks in teaching ability, she more than makes up for by her shameless flirting. “Penny continues to make really poor choices when it comes to men, and this series she excels herself. Put it this way, despite being really smug about her new boyfriend, she soon discovers that the relationship probably isn’t the best career move she’s ever made.”

Apart from Bodies, The Vice and Murder City, Tamzin has also appeared in Always and Everyone, Dangerfield, Poirot – Evil under the Sun; A Touch of Frost and Kavanagh QC.

On stage she has appeared in Nude with a Violin at the Manchester Royal Exchange; Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Of Mice and Men both at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
