Jason and Jenny before
Episode 6 - Jenny and Jason Betts

Jenny, 40, and 18-year-old Jason are mother and son from Nottingham. Jenny is 5ft 2 and Jason is 5 ft 10, and between them, they weigh 31 stone.

Jason’s problem is his sweet tooth. He often drinks 70 teaspoons of sugar a week in his cups of tea alone, equivalent to 35 jam filled doughnuts. He also loves chips, pizza, cakes and sausage rolls and rarely eats any fresh fruit or vegetables.

Jenny, who says she feels older than her 40 years, tends to comfort eat. She has an unhealthy liking for pork pie and pickle sandwiches, swimming in vinegar. Jenny and Jason cover their foods in condiments, suggesting to Gillian that they have dulled their taste buds. Many of the condiments Gillian finds in their fridge are loaded with table salt and sugar.

Gillian presents Jason's food intake for one week to the pair and they are shocked by how much fat they see. Jenny becomes tearful when Gillian tells her that she is responsible for Jason’s weight problem as well as her own. After a comforting hug from her son, Jenny and Jason are resolved to make big changes to improve their health.

Gillian gives Jason and Jenny a holistic once over, looking for signs of deficiencies or health problems. Jenny tells Gillian that she has high blood pressure. Looking at Jason’s skin, Gillian notices his spots and says this could be due to a lack of vitamin C in his diet.

Dr Sanjiv Patel analyses Jenny and Jason’s blood samples in the lab. The results reveal that Jason is indeed deficient in vitamin C. Gillian says she will prescribe a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, blackcurrants and berries to combat the problem.

Once the Betts have consulted their GP, Gillian introduces Jason and Jenny to the foods which will make up their new way of life, including fresh greens, fruit and pulses. Jason tries his new breakfast – a raspberry smoothie rich in vitamin C - good for collagen in the skin, and Jenny, who hates celery, promises to drink celery and parsley juice for the health benefits.

By week four the Betts have devised a timetable with Gillian to ensure the work is divided fairly between them, and are enjoying walks together and visits to the gym for light exercise. Both are already feeling more confident and have found healthy substitutes for evenings in front of television eating take away food.

After eight weeks the new Jenny and Jason look fantastic. They have each lost over 2 stone and vowed to continue to eat healthily. Jenny’s whole attitude towards food and shopping has changed. She always reads labels and thinks a lot more about what she puts inside her body and it shows. Gillian is delighted to hear that Jenny’s blood pressure has dropped 30 points and is continuing to decrease. Jason’s spots are clearing up and they both have much more energy than before.

We say goodbye to Jenny and Jason as they happily walk the dog in the park together.
