You Are What You Eat
You Are What You Eat - Raj before
Episode 2 - Raj Mann

Raj Mann is a 27-year-old market analyst who lives with his wife and young family in Warwick. He is 27, 5ft 8 and 22 stone.

Raj is the ultimate sneaky eater. Even though his wife, Dali cooks fresh, healthy meals for the family every evening, Raj usually stops off for a takeaway on his way home before dinner. That’s after he has spent all day snacking on chocolate and drinking gallons of sugary tea at work, and usually had a pub lunch.

And even that isn’t enough. Raj is such a snack-a-holic that he has his own freezer out in the garage where he hides all sorts of goodies such as chips and pizzas. At night, when the family has gone to bed, he often sits and munches in front of the telly.

Raj’s family has no idea of the extent of his secret eating habits and Gillian McKeith is here to blow the whistle on this sneaky eater. When she raids the kitchen she is initially pleased to see the fridge full of the fresh and healthy food Dali uses for the family meals, but that soon changes when Raj confesses and shows her the other freezer in the garage.

Gillian knows that Raj needs a wake up call and that Dali must know the truth, so she confronts them with all the food that Raj has eaten behind Dali’s back. They are both stunned, and Gillian has strong words for Raj telling him that he is insulting Dali by preferring to eat this to the beautiful meals she prepares. Gillian is particularly concerned about the fat Raj eats so she illustrates the amount he gets though in a week – by showing him 5 kilos of animal fat.

Gillian consults Dr Sanj and there’s more bad news for Raj. The results of his blood test confirm that his cholesterol level is 6.8 - a healthy level is 5 or below.

You Are What You Eat - Raj after

Gillian devises a new regime for Raj to combat his high-cholesterol and non-stop snacking comprised of three healthy main meals and healthy snacks with lots of juices. His new low carb, high protein diet is full of fish, grains, fruit and vegetables designed to curb his hunger and lower his cholesterol. Gillian also takes the measure of putting the freezer in the garage under lock and key!

Initially Raj struggles with temptation from the takeaways on the way home. The miso soup that Gillian prescribes does not go down well either and he misses the food in the freezer. Gillian takes him to a health food shop and shows him alternative ways of introducing exciting flavours into foods by using lots of herbs and ingredients such as nori flakes. She also introduces him to gentle exercise to build up his fitness without straining his heart.

By week 6, Raj is seeing results and finding the diet easier and easier. He even makes Dali a healthy meal of chickpea burgers. He has embraced going to they gym regularly and has started to play football again.

When Gillian returns at the end of the 2 months she is delighted to see the new Raj. He has lost 3 and a half stone and is bursting with energy and enthusiasm. He tells Gillian that his whole approach to life has changed and he now has more energy for everything. As he said in a text he recently sent to Gillian, he now feels like a god and has the confidence and energy to do anything.

As we say goodbye to Raj, we see him happily swinging his children round in the park.
