You Are What You Eat
Nick Hughes Revisited

Last year we met eight brave volunteers all on a mission to become healthier with the help of holistic nutritionist Gillian McKeith. The results were phenomenal, with all them losing on average 2½ stone each.

But how did the slimmed-down success stories from series one get on once Gillian's watchful gaze had moved on to series two's new case studies?

This week Gillian catches up with Nick Hughes, a 40-year-old single man from Leeds.

When Gillian first met Nick he weighed 19½ stone and enjoyed nothing more than pizzas and fry-ups and didn't think twice about eating an entire shepherd's pie in one sitting, by himself. He also loved a good drink and frequently knocked back pints of vodka and orange juice.

Motivated by turning 40, Nick decided to tackle his appalling diet with Gillian's help. At the time, he suffered from bad breath, breathlessness, lacked energy, and was deficient in many nutrients including essential fatty acids, and Gillian was concerned that he was putting strain on his heart.

Gillian set about making some major changes for Nick, banishing alcohol and fry-ups, and devising a new eating plan rich in fresh vegetables, fruits and grains. In place of meaty, fatty shepherd's pie, Gillian substituted aduki bean stew with butternut squash, and sweet potatoes to keep his sweet cravings under control at night.

So eight months after their first meeting, what did Gillian find when she returned to see Nick? Has she been out of sight and out of mind, or had she made a permanent impact on his life by making him change the way he thinks about food?

To Gillian's delight, Nick has now lost a total of 5 stone and dropped 4 clothes sizes. He has lost eight inches from around his middle and even has muscle definition in his abdomen and arms. Not only has Nick lost more weight, he feels more confident in relationships and has more energy. He is still frequently visiting the gym and walking the dog.
