You Are What You Eat
The Mawsons

Geraldine and Tony Mawson live in Leicester with their three daughters, Daisy May nine, five-year-old Olivia and two-year-old Freya. Full-time mum Geraldine is 5 ft 9 and 18 stone 8 lbs, making her eight stone over the healthy weight for her height.

Her problem is that when it comes to food she doesn't know when to stop. She serves herself and her family enormous portions of everything and always cooks enough for ten rather than the five she has to feed.

Her favourite meal is a Sunday roast, but Geraldine's piled-high platefuls usually include two types of potatoes - buttery mash and roast – as well as numerous Yorkshire puddings and balls of stuffing. Afters are usually a fat-laden pudding such as chocolate roulade covered in cream, and despite their big portions, the Mawsons still find room for more and usually have a snack or two between meals.

Holistic nutritionist, Gillian McKeith knows she's got her work cut out here. She heads straight for the kitchen and finds a 56lb bag of potatoes. She tells Geraldine that the potatoes aren’t the problem, but the fats she doubtlessly puts on them are. Next Gillian finds the 'goodie cupboard', full of crisps and chocolate. She tells Geraldine that she should be ashamed that it's so accessible to the children.

Having asked Geraldine to keep a food diary, Gillian shows her all the food she gets through in a week. It includes nine chocolate bars, seven packets of crisps, 14 biscuits and a Sunday roast with four tablespoons of mash, four roast potatoes, four balls of stuffing, three Yorkshire puddings and gallons of gravy. Gillian serves Geraldine a massive shock in the shape of the equivalent of her weekly fat content in Yorkshire puddings – 500 in total.

A few days into the new regime, Geraldine is doing well and her cupboards are full of healthy foods. The children, however, are missing their treats and having difficulty getting to grips with some of the new foods. Gillian drops by to give Geraldine a pep talk. She advises her not to fret and allow them to try the new foods in their own time. If they seem Geraldine and Tony enjoying them, eventually they will become more interested.

When Gillian returns at the end of the eight weeks she's delighted to see a lighter, brighter Geraldine. She has lost nearly three stone and has dropped three dress sizes. Furthermore she has changed how the whole family eat and revitalised them all. The portions they eat are now smaller and they are satisfied after mealtimes. Gillian is amazed by the transformation.
