This week, we meet Lorna Slater, a 49-year-old divorcee from Northamptonshire. Thanks to her sweet tooth, 5’1” and 13 ½ stone Lorna’s eating habits are more like a five-year-old’s than a 50-year-old’s: she constantly snacks on sweets, cakes and chocolate.
Lorna’s situation is not helped by her desk-bound job, and although she may not have noticed how unhealthy she is becoming, her workmates have and decided to secretly nominate her to endure Gillian McKeith’s notorious scrutiny. Luckily, Lorna is up for the challenge, and with Gillian’s help she is determined to overcome her sweet tooth.
Lorna’s workmates have secretly kept a food diary of all the food she has eaten in a week. All the food laid out looks more like a child’s birthday party spread than a grown woman’s diet. There are mountains of sugary, jelly sweets, cakes, chocolates bars and 14 litres of diet cola.

To show Lorna how diabolical her diet is, Gillian displays in her kitchen the 20lbs of sugar she eats in a month, which is equivalent to 91 maxi packs of jelly sweets. Consuming this amount of sugar is putting a strain on Lorna’s heart and putting her at risk of type-2 diabetes.
Gillian sends Lorna for a colonic before she starts her new regime. Her new healthy food plan includes a colourful rainbow of fruit and vegetables with beans, pulses and fresh fish. It looks altogether more adult and lower in fat.
As well as improving her diet, Lorna needs to step up the exercise. Gillian takes her along to a ‘Nifty at Fifty’ workout, which they both really enjoy and Lorna signs up for six months membership at the gym.
After eight weeks, Lorna looks fabulous. Gillian is really proud of her and delighted with her progress. Lorna is well on her way to her fit, rather than flabby, fifties.
