Fiona Derin is a 42-year-old travel advisor who lives in Bournemouth with her husband Ugur. She may be the better half, but she’s also the bigger. Weighing 18 ½ stone, Fiona is nearly double the weight of her slim husband. She enjoys takeaway food and burgers, but worst of all, devours mounds of milk chocolate and cheese despite being allergic to dairy products. After she eats her beloved chocolate or cheese she suffers from terrible itchiness in her throat and ears, and every time she does so, she runs the risk of having a more severe reaction.
In one week, Fiona’s food diary includes two brie and grape baguettes, four slices of toast with butter and jam, six slices of garlic bread, nine bags of crisps and six turkey burgers. Plus six double vodkas, 13 large gin and tonics and two large rum and colas. Most concerning, she scoffs a chocolate éclair, two chocolate mini rolls, 12 chocolate bars and 14 chocolate orange sponge biscuits, despite her allergy.
Gillian shows Fiona a mock grave made of chocolate with ‘R.I.P Death By Chocolate’ on the tombstone, which brings her to tears. Ugur says he will support Fiona throughout and keep her away from chocolate. At the good food table, she is hesitant to try some of the new foods, however Gillian bullies her into trying as much as she can stomach. As a treat Gillian has her own special recipe for Turkish delight made with blueberries and seaweed for Fiona.
Unfortunately, her colleagues are being less than supportive and continue to gobble burgers and chips in the office. However, despite their taunts she sticks to her healthier options.
Four weeks in, Gillian takes the couple belly dancing to show them they can have fun without the alcohol they miss so much. Fiona must also be careful to eat all meals as she has been skipping lunch at work if she is busy. By week five Fiona is regularly going to the gym in her lunch hour and sticking to the full eating regime.
After the full eight weeks, Fiona has lost an incredible three stone and dropped two dress sizes. She hasn’t missed chocolate at all and has replaced her dairy with alternatives. The itchiness has gone as well as the irritating clucking sound she used to make when her throat itched. Ugur is also delighted; they do not argue and are happy without alcohol.
