You Are What You Eat
Episode 13 – The Saunders Family

This week Gillian is on a mission to save children from their lunchboxes. She hits the school playground and is disgusted to find sugary, processed junk is on the menu for most children.

Lisa Saunders from Bedfordshire is a prime example of an unhealthy lunchbox packer. It’s no wonder her and husband Tony’s two young boys, Johnny, aged 12 and Harry, aged 8, are both already overweight considering they tuck into white bread and processed ham sandwiches followed by cheesy strings, muffins and chocolate bars for lunch. 17 ½ stone Lisa is certainly not leading by example and her children have inherited her love of sticky cakes and sugary snacks.

The diet overhaul begins and Gillian replaces the sugar-laden junk with fruit, vegetables, white meat, fish, beans and pulses.

Lisa follows the menus and perseveres with the disgruntled children at meal times but is ignoring the exercise, so Gillian gets the family working out together and playing in the park.

At school, Harry is not impressed with his mackerel and fresh pepper sandwiched between two lettuce leaves for lunch, but is very happy to find he can still eat pizza; so long as it’s a home made, wholemeal, fresh vegetable version, Gillian style.

After eight weeks, Lisa has dropped two dress sizes and lost 2 stone and Tony has lost 2 ¼ stone and four inches from his waist. Johnny has lost 12lbs and has dropped a clothing size whilst brother Harry has lost 10lbs and fits into clothes made for his own age range. Both children understand more about the foods they eat and admit to preferring their new meals. Gillian is delighted and has a hug for Harry when he tells her his teacher has noticed an improvement in his behaviour.
