You Are What You Eat
Alan before
This week, Gillian meets 28-year-old Alan Maidens-Taylor from Essex.

By day Alan is a sober insurance consultant, but by night he transforms into a flamboyant drag artist DJ, partying the night away behind his decks while knocking back pint after pint. At 20 stone and 6’, however, Alan’s party animal lifestyle, and taste for junk, has sent his weight soaring and in just eight years he has doubled his size.

Alan’s concerned partner Nathan shopped him to Gillian McKeith, who confronts him at his office. She leads him home and presents him with his bad food table, which includes two roast dinners, two portions of fish and chips, Chinese takeaway with chips and ½ a tiramisu. Gillian is appalled by the sight and incensed when he swipes a sweet from the table and eats it.

Alan’s drinking habits are also of concern. In a week Nathan recorded he drank more than five times the recommended amount of alcohol, which accounts for more than he eats.

He admits to comfort eating in a heart to heart with Gillian and says he feels good for a few minutes after binging but then feels depressed again.

Alan makes a good start on the regime. He gets to know his vegetables at a local market, experiments with menu options and his fridge is bursting with fresh foods. The biggest test is a visit to the pub where resisting alcohol is a real struggle surrounded by friends drinking.

The regime begins to feel easier and by week six he is working out at the gym with Nathan by his side, supporting him all the way.

After eight weeks, Alan has lost nearly three stone. It has been tough, but he has stayed on the wagon. His old clothes hang off him as he has lost nine inches from his waist. He has changed his entire approach to life and Nathan is delighted.
