You Are What You Eat
Allyson before

Having dealt with the terrible extent of their eating habits, Gillian knows she also has to make Allyson and Angela face facts about their binge drinking, so she shows them the food equivalent of the amount of alcohol they get through in a week – 135 fatty rashers of bacon.

Gillian then gives Angela and Allyson a holistic once-over. Angela is sensitive to the touch just below her right rib. Gillian tells her she believes this is due to the strain alcohol is putting on her liver. Allyson has a problem with excessive sweating. Bravely taking a whiff of her armpit, Gillian tells her that she believes the toxins she is putting in her body are seeping out through her pores.

Having consulted their GP, it is time for Allyson and Angela to become acquainted with their new diet. Gillian has devised an 8-week food plan designed to flush out toxins and replenish their depleted stocks of vitamins and minerals. Fast foods are out and fresh foods are in. They used to start their days with a hangover; now they are to start it with sage tea. Gillian has replaced their hangover cures with smoked tofu and rice burgers, hoping the tofu will prevent them missing the bacon they are used to eating. She also shows them foods such as broccoli and cabbage that she believes will help their stressed livers.

Angela after

2 weeks into the diet, Angela and Allyson are missing the huge amount of meat they used to eat, and are struggling with some of the foods such as sushi rolls and avocado. Meanwhile Dr Sanjiv has more bad news for Angela, as the results of her liver function tests show raised scores indicating damage.

It is not too late to repair the damage however, and luckily under Gillian’s guidance, both women are finding it easy to turn their back on the booze. They are even beginning to enjoy the food, as Angela declares oatbran pancakes with chunky vegetables and kidney beans ‘gorgeous’.

Gillian also introduces Angela and Allyson to some gentle exercise. For Angela, it is swimming, and for Allyson, boxercise, which is great for burning calories and toning muscles.

8 weeks on, and it is another great result for Gillian. She returns to find that Angella has lost nearly 3 stone and Allyson has dropped 4 dress sizes. Both are brimming with energy and confidence. Neither is missing alcohol and they have both finally realised that their old diet was stopping them feeling and looking well. As well as her newfound confidence, Allyson has found a new man, and we see her happily out for a walk with him as the programme ends.
