Episode 2 - The Allam Family

The Allam family is a traditional Greek family who likes to eat well - too well. Kate prides herself on creating wonderful meals, but her small frame is carrying a whopping 20 stone, and her daughter Helena and son Sheriff are also paying the price for the family feasting.

Helena is just 14 but weighs 14 stone, and is well on her way to being clinically obese. Sheriff is 16, weighs in over 18 stone and has been told by his doctor that he is risking a heart attack. They would both love to feel comfortable wearing the same clothes as their mates, but just feel too fat. It quickly becomes clear to Gillian that it isn't only mum's home cooking that's the culprit, as Helena also snacks on chips and chocolate while Sheriff supplements his mum's meals with daily takeaways.

The first thing Gillian does for the family is to re-educate them about their eating habits - starting with the shocking fact that their meals contain so much salt that within a year they will have consumed 52 kilos of the white stuff!

Kate is sent for a colonic, while the whole family's urine samples are sent to the lab for testing. The results show a lack of vitamins B1 and B6, which may explain the family's swollen ankles, since these vitamins help regulate fluids in the body.

Gillian sets about swapping their beloved animal protein (red meat) for much healthier vegetable protein, such as quinoa. From now on, the Allam family must sack the salt and focus on the natural flavour of their food.

After a reluctant start, the Allam family really get into their new routine. After 8 weeks, the results are striking. Kate has dropped 2 dress sizes, Sheriff has shed 2 stone and Helena can now wear her favourite fashions and has ditched the clothes she hated. Will it last? The Allam family seem to think so...
