I am a make-up/hair artist for TV
and film, based in London.
Paying the Rent
I was a trainee wig dresser for theatres at
night.
Lucky Breaks
The make-up designer, Louis Burwell, took me
on as a 'daily' (paid on a daily rate - temporary) for Fifth Element,
filmed at Pinewood Studios. It gave me such confidence and gave me
a taste of the great side of this job.
College Knowledge
After school I did an HND in Business Studies
then worked in the civil service till I knew what I wanted to do and
could afford it. When I first heard about make-up for TV and film
I got all the glossy mags and went for a two-day trial course with
Greasepaint Make-up School - I loved it and signed up for the whole
thing.
Way Cool
I love being creative, working with people
and seeing the finished product on screen.
The Flipside
Sometimes the make-up calls are really early,
like 4.30am if I'm doing a breakfast show.
Advice
Do as many student films as you can - learn
the ropes here. There's no room for error on a professional job. Build
your network of make-up artists and share your work out. If you're
busy, offer the job to friends. You'll get plenty back in return.
Being dedicated and hard-working will pay off.
Regrets
It's a great career and I would never change
it.
Inspirations
My family has been very supportive. My dad
was always encouraging me to 'go for it'.
Crystal Ball
I aim to continue make-up designing for dramas
and feature films (and get a cocker spaniel).
If I wasn't doing this
I'd probably be a food critic or a food taster
because I like pies!!!
