The Sharks
Getting Started
To begin with both islands have been provided with basic food, cooking utensils, building materials, tools and plenty of sunscreen. Apart from that they are entirely on their own. Everything they want to eat must now be cooked from scratch on an open fire. They have absolutely no shelter so life in paradise will be bleak unless they do something about it. They have the resources to build elaborate shelters or huts but whether they have the skills and motivation is another question.
Sharks vs. Tigers
The rival tribes will use all their skills and cunning to ensure that their island is the most desirable and efficiently run. But they’re not just competing to see who has the comfiest hammock. Both teams have a huge incentive to make their island as attractive welcoming as possible. Each week for 19 weeks a new person will be shipwrecked. The new arrival will spend three days living with each tribe, assessing their relative merits - who has the most food? Who do they fancy? Or what island has the best accommodation? Then, on the seventh day, at the weekly beach party, the new Shipwrecker will announce which island they would prefer to join and the inhabitants of the chosen island must accept the new arrival.
Moving Between Islands
- Moving between islands is strictly prohibited (unless it’s an island swap) except at the weekly beach party, which will be held on alternating islands.
- If a Shipwrecker becomes dissatisfied with their particular community and wants to move to the rival island permanently, then they can nominate themselves at the beach party (but at no other place or time).
- Only if the inhabitants of the rival island agree to accept them to their island - by a majority vote - are they allowed to move.
- If they are not accepted then they must stay and reside with their current group. If they are still intent on moving they will have to wait until the next beach party to put their case forward again.
- If two or more people put themselves forward for nomination from one island, then the rival island are only permitted to accept one nominee per week, unless open group nominations are announced.
- There must always be a minimum of five people living on an island at any time and nominations are only permitted if an island has six or more people in their tribe.
- Only two island moves are permitted per person during the series.
- If rival islanders want to meet up at other times during the week, for example to discuss island business or engage in romantic dalliances (!), then they must swim out to the purpose built pontoon, which is located in the water equidistant between the two islands.
The Weekly Beach Party
Every Sunday each island takes it in turns to host a day-long beach party for the other tribe - a chance for both the Tigers and the Sharks to meet and socialise and a perfect excuse for the host island to show off just how organised and bountiful their community is. The party also plays host to the new arrivals’ ‘choosing ceremony’ and following this, any island nominations will also be put forward at this point.
The Booty Drops
- Throughout the five months there will be two types of ‘Booty Drop’.
- ‘Booty’ comprising building materials and equipment will be washed up on each island at regular intervals - it will be up to the inhabitants to discover it. The amount and content of each simultaneous drop will be exactly the same for both islands. They will also each be provided with a customised handbook, full of helpful tips for constructing practical structures from the materials supplied.
- ‘Extra Booty’ comprises anything from additional practical items to impromptu treats. This will be ‘dropped’ at irregular times onto the pontoon, equidistant between the two islands. Each island will be alerted to the pontoon drop by the sound of a siren.
- The quickest person/s from either island to swim or boat across the lagoon and retrieve the booty will win and get to take the luxuries back to share with their fellow inhabitants. The losing island will return empty-handed.
The Finale
After the final new arrival has chosen their preferred tribe and the last nomination has taken place, the island with the most inhabitants on the final day wins the £70,000 cash prize to split between its residents.
