Gerard Kearns in The Mark of Cain

Gerard Kearns, aka Ian Gallagher, has got himself a nice little sideline - it's even won a South Bank Show Award.

Channel 4 film The Mark of Cain - in which Gerard plays a squaddie struggling with the reality of war - has won the best TV drama category.

A far cry from the Chatsworth Estate, the film portrays a group of young British soldiers in Iraq becoming profoundly affected by what they see and the things they do.

"The emotions are just terrible," said Gerard in an interview about the drama.

"They [the soldiers] are just ruined by the end of it. So it was a fantastic experience, but it was really draining."

The Mark of Cain was up against Doctor Who and Boy A for the award. The ceremony took place on 29 January 2008, and will be broadcast on ITV1 on Sunday 3 February.
