The Gallaghers receive a home visit from Liam's teacher. He is threatened with exclusion for behavioural problems and telling other classmates during their nativity play that Jesus doesn't exist. Without Frank or Monica present for the visit, Debbie panics, shaves Liam’s head and pretends that he has cancer.

Her lie soon spreads around the estate and before long the pub begins an appeal for Liam. Frank and Sheila are devastated to find out and immediately insist on moving in with the family. Frank is faced with a genuine reason to get drunk every day.

Monica and her girlfriend turn up at the Gallagher's and threaten to take Liam back with them. Liam runs into the arms of Debbie refusing to go, and Monica is forced to leave without him.

'Liam Day' is invented and a fete is held to raise money for his collection. Liam announces to the crowd that he’s not really ill and is only pretending. But attention is soon moved from Liam to Frank, who suddenly collapses on a bouncy castle.
