Summer Read WHERE OUR REVIEWERS WENT...

Our reviewers went to Kefalonia, the largest of the group of Greek Islands known as the Ionian islands, and the sixth largest of all greek islands.

WHAT WE THOUGHT...

Denise Welch, on holiday in Istanbul, Turkey, reviews the book for us, along with a team of our viewers who were visiting Kefalonia in Greece.

We were then joined on the sofa by national treasure Michael Palin and presenter Naomi Cleaver who tell us their thoughts on the book.

Summer Read DENISE WELCH IN TURKEY!

Istanbul is the only city in the world which embraces two continents, one arm reaching out into Asia, the other into Europe.

The former capital of three successive empires - Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman - the city is a fascinating mixture of past and present, old and new, modern and traditional. The museums, churches, palaces, mosques and bazaars, and the sights of natural beauty seem inexhaustible. As you recline on the shores of the Bosphorus at sunset contemplating the red evening light reflected in the windows and slender minarets on the opposite shore you understand, suddenly and profoundly, why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build on this remarkable site.

Summer Read MICHAEL PALIN!

“I’m finding it a very positive read and am really looking forward to getting to the end to find out what happens. For a first time writer it’s an amazing piece and the prose is lovely.

I think it’s a really earthy, sensual book which totally draws you in and hooks you. The writer’s eye for detail is brilliant - she notices little things like specs of dust on a chair and really weaves her characters well. I love the way she has the ability to see things perfectly through a child’s eyes and flits effortlessly from the past to the present. I was never confused about the story.

I think Evie is a really intriguing character and from the first time you meet her you feel an instant empathy. While she describes Evie’s world in detail, she makes other characters come alive as well.

I didn’t realise that the author wasn’t Welsh because she describes the landscape and culture so passionately. You can really tell that she was inspired by poetry.”

Summer Read NAOMI CLEAVER!

Naomi says overall she enjoyed the book, but felt it was obviously a first time novel because the language was quite ‘self conscious’ in places.

“I think it was a beautifully written book, but I wanted a bit more of a story and was racing through the last few pages wanting all the loose ends tied up. The narrative was obviously a vehicle for the author’s writing, and was obviously a first novel.

It was a good story of a child thrust into a very adult world and I found the language very poetic and descriptive. However I just wondered whether an eight year-old would be able to have such complex relationships with adults like Daniel and Billy. In reality I find it hard to believe an eight year-old would spend so much time with a 24 year-old.

I think she handled the issue of a child’s sense of isolation and alienation very well and how a child adapts to new surroundings.

The descriptions of Wales were very evocative and it did make me think why am I stuck in a stuffy office? I just wanted to kick off my shoes and lie down in a field. I can’t wait for the author’s second book, which I think will be quite a different read.

Eve Green is a real girls’ book and I can’t imagine my husband reading it.”

NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND NLB

Imagine not being able to get hold of the book all your friends are saying you must read. Newspapers, magazines and TV shows are telling you it’s one of the best books they’ve ever read, but you can’t read it, let alone express your views or vote for it.

Thankfully that is not the case with Richard & Judy’s Summer Read! Once again, the National Library for the Blind (NLB) has worked closely alongside Richard & Judy to make sure blind people can take part in the Best Read and is producing the short-listed books in Braille to sit alongside each book club programme.
