THERMAGE
Thermage is the first non-invasive procedure that delivers tightened tissue, renewed facial contours and healthier collagen via radio frequency technology. For further information on Thermage go to www.thermage-treatment.co.uk or email info@thermage-treatment.co.uk
Always consult a professional before undergoing any skin treatments. For more information please visit www.bad.org.uk
Other non - invasive skin treatments include:
Intense pulsed light (IPL) rejuvenation (photofacial or photorejuvenation)
Also sometimes known as a flash lamp, IPL systems work by being absorbed by the skin surface abnormalities and also by the superficial thread veins and normal veins in the skin. This process releases growth factors that produce new collagen. It is also thought that they work by heating the skin below the surface, again to produce more collagen by stimulating the cells called fibroblasts.
Blood Vessel Lasers as Non-ablative Rejuvenating Systems
The blood vessel pulsed dye lasers developed to treat port-wine birthmarks and thread veins have also been used successfully in skin rejuvenation, particularly for fair skin with spider veins or background redness.
It is thought that the blood vessel lasers act in a rejuvenating capacity by causing a slight injury to the blood vessels in the skin, which then respond by releasing growth factors that stimulate the fibroblast cells in the dermis to produce new collagen.

TUMMY TUB
A baby bath that can calm a screaming child in seconds is being hailed as a breakthrough by childcare experts.
Infants sit upright in the £20 Tummy Tub, which is designed to mimic the experience of being in the womb. Whilst making bath time enjoyable from birth; its design ensures that babies adopt and relax in the familiar and natural foetal position.
Devotees say that it calms down their babies and soothes colic - and some even believe that the water's buoyancy encourages their babies to become early walkers.

BABY BLISS is published by Penguin - Full details are on our Books Page
Dr Harvey Karp's Five 'S's discussed on the show were:
Swaddling:
This is the ‘cornerstone’ of calming your baby. It does not trigger the calming reflex, but it stops your baby thrashing around and over stimulating itself – the baby won’t also accidentally upset itself. It also reminds the baby of the confinement sensation it felt when it was in the womb and as a result the baby feels protected and safe, as though it’s back home. However, it’s the next S that initiates the calming reflex.
Side/stomach wrap:
This is not a sleeping position. This position is to calm the baby as it reminds it of being in the womb. The baby should be put on one side, shoulders just slightly down, after it’s been wrapped.
Shushing:
Dr Karp explains that like the sound of the wind is calming, this is the same sensation for a baby. As the baby is wrapped up and on it’s side, the ‘shushing’ sound made by the parents lets the baby know that everything is all right. It also reminds the baby of the noise inside the uterus when the blood surges through the arteries. Whilst the noise can also come from a hairdryer or even washing machine, the important factor is that the noise is loud enough for the baby to hear. Whilst it may sound rude or quite aggressive, the noise needs to be as loud as the baby’s cry. For some babies, this is not enough to calm them down, so you add the fourth S – swinging.
Swinging/ jigging movement:
Like the gigging sensation the baby feels in the womb, babies love this movement. If the shushing noise doesn’t work, the aim is to rock the baby’s head in small moves rather than big ones. The baby begins to relax. It’s important not to shake the baby, as this would cause immense damage to the child. Dr Karp explains that the movement is more of a shiver.
Sucking:
As the fifth S this is the icing on the cake, if the other four S’s haven’t been enough. Whilst sucking on the mother’s breast is the most powerful of calming a baby, it is also possible to offer a finger or dummy as an alternative, although some babies need to be trained in this area. If a baby doesn’t take to a dummy, then the best thing to do is try and pull it from it’s mouth. This way the baby automatically sucks harder on it as it thinks it’s about to lose it - reverse psychology.

Parents can help with a deposit, using either savings or releasing equity from their homes.
If parents want to help but have less disposable cash, they can act as a guarantor for a child’s mortgage. Most High Street lenders offer guarantor arrangements, but parents should take independent legal advice as they are liable for the whole mortgage if the child defaults. Other arrangements can allow savings in other people’s names (for example grandparents) to be used to offset a family members mortgage, either to reduce the balance or it’s term.
For homebuyers with no deposit, a 100 per cent mortgage is possible, but usually at a higher rate.
Usually run by housing associations with state and private funding, this can be an excellent way to get a foothold on the property ladder. Schemes allow borrowers to buy a share of the property – usually 25 per cent or more – and pay rent on the rest with the option to buy the balance later. Set-up costs are minimal and they can help single buyers and key workers who would normally be unable to afford to buy.
Joining with friends or relatives is an option but if you fall out, you can’t just walk away. You will still be liable for the mortgage repayments.
It is worth considering buying a two-bedroom property rather than a one-bed. Then if the mortgage repayments are a struggle to repay then the second bedroom can be let.
New homes can often be cheaper than older properties. Some builders offer incentives to new buyers (for example, they offer no deposit or pay your deposit for you) and a newly-built home is less likely to need a detailed and expensive survey.
Considering an interest-only mortgage for the early years of your loan can be a good idea. Provided you switch to a repayment loan after a few years when your income is higher, this can be an easier way onto the ladder.

A team of mathematicians and psychologists in the US have developed a test that they claim can predict, with astonishing accuracy, whether couples are destined to divorce. The research was carried out over a ten-year period using 700 couples and the results are claimed to be 94% accurate.
The model is based on complex maths but uses a very simple test to monitor the way in which a couple communicate with each other when discussing a contentious issue. Patterns of speech and behaviour are observed in order to quantify the likely success of a marriage. Try the test for yourself!
The mathematical model used in this test is so simple, it can be easily used at home to work out whether your relationship is in trouble; just follow these simple guidelines.
Ask a friend to monitor you talking to your partner for 15 minutes. You should cover topics such as sex, child-rearing, money and housework and award positive and negative points according to the following criteria.

Isolagen is the brand name for a new cosmetic treatment. Launched in the U.K. in 2002, it is an autologous (derived from organisms of the selfsame individual) cell therapy that uses the patient’s own fibroblasts (cells which produce and replace collagen) to correct defects, including wrinkles and scarring. It is the first and only natural process to use the patient’s own cells to repair and rejuvenate the skin.
As the treatment has not been around for very long there have not been any clinical trials into the long term effects of Isolagen, however no side effects, apart from a little redness after injections, have been reported.

1) You can teach yourself to meditate - there are plenty of books and tapes around, or you can go to a teacher. Anyone can learn to meditate so if it isn't happening for you get a different book, tape or teacher.
2) Focus first on your breathing - breath is an important way to control your mind and your body. The way you breathe is the sign of your inward and mental state - for example in situations of panic you breath more quickly - so control your breathing and you control your mind. Good breathing stops toxins being released into your bloodstream.
3) Use visualisation - this involves focusing on a particular picture or image. Often it is a Buddha or a flickering candle but Paul finds for most ordinary people visualising a 'special place' works best in focusing the mind.
4) Learn to breathe - and meditate - all over the place - don't just limit yourself to a quiet corner of an empty house. You need to be able to turn it on in all stressful situations - that could be driving in your car or working in an office.
5) Do it twice a day - just 15 minutes morning and night time is enough for life.

FAMILY TIES
Civil registration began in 1837 in England and Wales; 1855 in Scotland; and 1864 in Ireland and records all Births, Marriages & Deaths.
Copies of the indexes are available at family records centres, local record offices and major libraries.
Census returns:
The first comprehensive census of the UK population was taken in 1801, and a census has been taken every 10 years since then (with the exception of 1941). The census provides us with unique information as it provides information on whole family groupings, while other documents concentrate on the individual. The census is subject to a ‘100 closure rule’, so latest available to us is the 1901 census.
The full 1881 census is available on CD-ROM, and the 1901 census is available online.
Wills:
Wills can give you a real insight into your ancestor’s personality as well as some firm facts about family relationships.
All wills generated after 1858, are held by a central probate registry in London. Dates before this have to be recovered from County Record Offices.
Before civil registration began in 1837, the most important source of official records of births, marriages and deaths is the parish registers compiled by the Church of England. Parish registers were first kept in 1538, though many of the earliest ones have not survived.
International Genealogical Index (IGI):
Compiled by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons), the IGI is an index to millions of names gathered from records all over the world. The IGI consists mainly of records of baptisms and marriages extracted from parish registers, but it also includes a large amount of information submitted by church members, based on research into their own family histories. It’s coverage extends from the time of the first parish registers in 1538. It is available on the internet www.familysearch.org, as well as on microfiche and on CD-ROM (which can be viewed at family records centres).
The Public Record Office:
The Public Record Office is the national ‘store-house’ for government records in the UK. Its main site at Kew holds surviving records of government dating back to the Domesday Book (1086).
Other sources:
Printed trade directories and the pensions register are also very useful resources for finding out about your family history and are held at local records libraries.
