Book Club ABOUT THE BOOK

The Promise of Happiness explores what happens to a middle-class family who, on the surface, seem happy and just like any other until their most beloved daughter gets thrown into jail in New York State for art theft, a crime she committed almost unwittingly.

The family falls apart and the novel describes how each family member fails to cope in their own particular way. It is a novel of immense power and deep humanity.

Book Club ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Justin was born in South Africa and educated in the US and at Oxford University. He is the author of 7 previous, and prize-winning, novels.

In Every Face I Meet was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, Leading the Cheers won the Whitbread Novel Award and White Lightening was shortlisted for the 2002 Whitbread Novel Award. Justin has also won other awards including a Commonwealth Writers Prize and the South African M-Net Award.

He lives in North London with his wife and, occasionally, his two sons. Although Justin has long been acknowledged in literary circles for his brilliant, prize-winning novels, what is not widely known is how accessible he is, how acute on families and domesticity, on love and lives lived in ‘normal’ times and ‘normal’ places.

NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND NLB

Imagine not being able to get hold of the book all your friends are saying you must read. Newspapers, magazines and TV shows are telling you it’s one of the best books they’ve ever read, but you can’t read it, let alone express your views or vote for it.

Thankfully that is not the case with Richard & Judy’s Best Read! Once again, the National Library for the Blind (NLB) has worked closely alongside Richard & Judy to make sure blind people can take part in the Best Read and is producing the short-listed books in Braille to sit alongside each book club programme.
