Book Club ABOUT THE BOOK

Six people, five women and a man, meet once a month in California's Central Valley to discuss Jane Austen's novels. They are ordinary people, but each of them is wounded in different ways and are mixed up about their lives and relationships.

Over the six months they meet, marriages are tested, affairs begin, and unsuitable arrangements become suitable. Under the guiding eye of Jane Austen a couple of them even fall in love.

Book Club ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Karen Joy Fowler was born in 1950 in Bloomington, Indiana. She majored in political science at the University of California at Berkeley. After completing her Masters degree at the University of Davis, she entered what she refers to as her 'child-rearing years' – until the age of 30 when she started to feel restless.

She first published science fiction stories and made herself a name in the sci-fi community with the publication of Artificial Things (short stories). This was followed by the novels Sarah Canary, The Sweetheart Season and Sister Noon and a short story collection, Black Glass. Karen lives in Davis and writes full time.

NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND NLB

Imagine not being able to get hold of the book all your friends are saying you must read. Newspapers, magazines and TV shows are telling you it’s one of the best books they’ve ever read, but you can’t read it, let alone express your views or vote for it.

Thankfully that is not the case with Richard & Judy’s Best Read! Once again, the National Library for the Blind (NLB) has worked closely alongside Richard & Judy to make sure blind people can take part in the Best Read and is producing the short-listed books in Braille to sit alongside each book club programme.
